Elevation at Furness RAM

A very popular destination for a run out and a spot of lunch or coffee and cake is the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow. As well as the automotive attractions it is ideally suited for a stroll along the River Leven. Whilst in the museum there is the opportunity to purchase pre-loved books with the proceeds raised going to St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston.
Harry Kilgour and Joe Crabtree
The driving force behind this fund-raising venture are Newby Bridge residents Joe and Dorothy Crabtree. Joe is a member of Jubilee Mark Lodger No 375 and has just been welcomed on board as the latest recruit to the ranks of Furness RAM Lodge No 375.

Joe’s elevation was held at Ulverston Masonic Hall and was the last regular meeting for Commander Harry Kilgour as it saw the election of Paul Johnson as Commander elect for the ensuing year.

Leading Joe through the ceremony was senior deacon Dave Baker who undertook his duties in fine style. All the more praiseworthy as there is a chance of confusion as he is also the senior deacon at The Furness Mark Lodge. Dave was supported by junior deacon Ian Cottam.

Harry played his part well but also showed great skill in the art of delegation. Keiron Mullan stepped from behind the scribe’s desk to communicate and explain the signs of the degree. Alan Jones was called into action to deliver the working tools. Paul ventured onto the floor to give an explanation of the steps. The ceremony was a pleasure to observe.

Following the formalities of the lodge room a simple but enjoyable supper of pie and peas was enjoyed. Paul did not dine as his working roster means that Friday evening is an opportunity to dine with his family which means he ate before the meeting. However, as a result he is available to help serve up the food and set about the washing up. As he will be sat at the table as Worshipful Commander next year someone else will need to bring along their Marigolds.

Joe and Dot have been running the book store to raise funds for the hospice for 30 years both at the museum and at the Lakeland and Haverthwaite Railway just down the road. They raise several thousand pounds every year. Initially the hospice received the money for general use but it is now targeted at helping patients and families. So successful have they been that they were able to purchase a car for the use of outreach nurses. Joe will always accept donations of books if you ever get around to sorting out your book shelves.
